I introduce you to Mehmet, Buse, Elif and Ayşenur, I'll work with them during my project. When I met them for the first time, i asked myself : " How can I communicate with them? I don't speak Turkish and they don't speak English!". But the language isn't important when you work on art! Before I begin to teach them Italian lesson, I was happy to see that the guys had an Italian dictonary and some applications on their mobile telephones. Since I came here, we have been in two film festivals : "Izmir short Film Festival" and "Human Rights Festival". It was nice to realise that we have same opinions about these movies and they will study art, cinema or theatre in the future. I have started my second project this week-end. This is the Map Project for young travellers in Izmir. This project is a part of a European network which makes the city more visibile particularly on art and culture environment. Atolye Deneme's waiting for confirmation to start this work, but we're optimistic about this and we wish to be first city in Turkey with this map! I had introduced to Atolye Deneme this work and the others guys were enthusiastic and then, I have met other two volunteers to help me on this. This sunday we have walked around Izmir's seafront and we have checked the first places to insert into the map, and we've trasformed a simple walk in a working evening, and I found an opportunity to learn some Turkish words.

Merhaba! Finally my EVS starts!
For the first time I introduce myself. I'm Federica and I'm 25 years old and I come from Italy, graduated in March 2013 in Cinema and Art.
When my studies finished my desire was to travel and to instill my passions and my hobbies in different coultures.
For this reason I moved for EVS's adventure and my chance was to try this project with "Atolye Deneme" in Izmir.
This's my first time in Turkey and I think this is a special opportunity to know a different country, this mounth was a continuos discovery!
I love the city's environment, çay's and narghilè's smell, to look everyday the sea, take the ferry to move in the city, awake to Mosque's prayer and seagulls's shout.
I've more projects for these 5 months: on the first time I will be discovered this city and this culture, I will to deny some Italian's prejudices for Turkish culture. Then it's my project in Atolye Deneme, I will organize a photography's workshop and even important is to know my team, with there I communicate with Turkish-Italian lessons.
These months will be very intense, and I want to spent my days as best I can. This first month is finishing and I don't want remorses abount my time with this opportunity!

Today, we just finished our last project. Painting a wall, of course. I really wanted, before leaving, let the youth, and Mehmet especially, have fun with spray cans, which was not really possible during the big fresco of Foça. Or by biking a few weeks ago, we discovered a spot around Bostanlı, so dirty that we could easily dare to put a new layer of colours on it.
At the contrary of our previous wall, my view was here to let the youth lead their own project. I just orchestrated. They have been sketching during the week, after having selected a quote, kind of typical teenager one, “why am I still living?”. And finally yesterday we went by foot to this so far away place, bedecked with our so heavy equipment.
Big joke, the wall was refurbished as new, painted two days before, as we will learn it later. A little bit uncertain, we finally decided to start, motivated by the hard kilometres we travelled. Purple tint area, spray sketching, and filling with the fresh remaining colours of Foça. Maybe because of the heat, the area was deserted, and we had a quiet first day.
Today, we had the great idea to take the bus, reaching easily the wall and after a lunch break, we started. Or, rather, we wanted. The tin of paint barely opened, a security guy, from the government, came to us, begging us to stop. He was appreciating what we were doing but, as it is his job, we had to put an end. Of course, except this main idea, I didn’t get a word of his remarks, I couldn’t react, and the children stayed silent. I was a little upset of their non-reaction, even if I understood it. After some talks with Ida, the French speaker, we both went to the security checkpoint, with the idea of entering into negotiations. Ida had a nice speech, helped by the ideas whispered some minutes before, and finally this understanding guard closed by “Ben görmedim”, “I didn’t see anything”, which let us a few hours to finish our piece. Ida, who wants to become advocate, just won her first case.
We came back to work with an increased motivation, and completed our piece in two hours. We finally didn’t put as details as in the sketch, and so, unfortunately for Mehmet we didn’t use the sprays so far. It avoided us to have some heavy-handed lines and let a simple but effective result, colourful and nice. It was their paint, so I didn’t feel so invest, but it was a happy last work of which children are rights to be proud.
Ps: at the end, I offered the whole stock of sprays to Mehmet, he will finally get the chance to grant his graffiti dream!

As a graphic designer, it was sure that I will do some graphic stuffs for the “Atölye”, and finally with the “Sokakta Festivali” coming, I began my first production, a leaflet presenting the association and another about the festival. So in April, my report is a little bit delayed.
The children being the centre of the foundation, actions being firstly lead for and with the youth, it was obvious that I will integrate them to the production of graphic objects. Besides, the “Atölye”, modest, crafty and manual, needs visuals reflecting these ideas. And finally I found that it would be interesting to separate the graphic action in two parts: first I organize the informations, creating the layout, ordering the elements, choosing a type, as the graphic designer; and then the children seize the objects, scribbling over the texts, filling with life the computer type, but also participating to the organization into a hierarchy, framing the titles, underlining mains ideas… And finally I supervised the last result, putting in order the whole work.
At the end we get a happy ordered mess, true to the image of the association, even if the costs forced us to print in black and white. And even these financial confines helped us to think to interesting solutions to set against the lack of colours, by surprising fold for examples. The manipulation establishing astonishment, it is a nice way to show the creative aspect of the “Atölye”, and to stand out from the tons of others flyers circulating in the city.
The enthusiast of the members of the association is always nice, and I am now working on visit cards, bags and T-shirts and small newspaper! See you soon for more details!
